Character History and Personality:
Sharon Carter, was born to Harrison and Amanda Carter in Virginia. Not exactly born with a silver spoon in her mouth, her parents were still wealthy. She grew up hearing stories from her parents, and her Aunt Peggy about her exciting World War II days, and most importantly the stories about Captain America. Captain America was a huge part of Sharon’s life even early on.
Eventually as Sharon grew up, she joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and eventually became a field agent code-name - Agent 13. It was during her time with SHIELD that she eventually met Captain America, and the two became fast friends and worked together on several missions. Though he had no idea her connection to Peggy at first. And for several years he only ever knew her as Agent 13. Over the course of this time both were responsible for getting each other out of plenty of trouble - and she saved him as often as he saved her.
They were sent on assignments together often, and were both equally responsible for defeating Red Skull on more than one occasion. It wasn’t until one of these moments, in the glow of victory that Sharon was allowed to reveal her true identity to Captain America, and this level of trust - amongst other things led to their relationship developing more deeply and the two became romantically involved with each other.
They were still paired together on missions, but eventually Sharon was responsible for leading the Femme Force, an all woman team of agents. Once she had managed to lead her own team for some time she decided to retire and focus on her life with Steve. It was only then when Steve realized that Sharon was the niece of his World War II paramour, Peggy. Creepy coincidences are creepy.
Also during this time was when Sharon had her first run in with Doctor Faustus who would prove to be the thorn in her side for the rest of her life. Despite her desire to retire from SHIELD, and after being kidnapped by Doctor Faustus Sharon decided to return to active duty and she returned to work. This made her a target for Doctor Faustus once again and he was able to control her mind due to invisible poisonous gas she had inhaled. Once again, Sharon was kidnapped and brainwashed by Doctor Faustus and she was helpless against his power. One of the first things he did was talk her into killing herself along with a park full of people.
Of course SHIELD knew that this was coming and Nick Fury was able to deprogram Sharon in time to fake her death and send her even deeper undercover. Lines got crossed, communication was skewed, Sharon was believed by SHIELD to be actually dead and they mourned her and never bothered looking for her. Needless to say this pissed her off a bit and she went a bit whacky in the head because of it. She joined the bad guys for a bit, but with Captain America’s help she was back to herself in no time.
That didn’t make her bad feelings toward Fury go away, but she was too late to confront him as it appeared that Fury had been killed by the Punisher. Of course, that didn’t last long and Sharon - desperate to find answers went undercover in the crime world and became listed as an enemy of the state and charged with treason. At this point, she traveled back in time (of course she did) and during WWII she found Nick Fury (of course she did again).
The two of them made amends with each other and battle their way back to the present day and once again Fury was MIA. During this time, Sharon was cleared of all her charges and actually filled in during Fury’s absence as SHIELD’s executive director. She always thought Director Carter had a nice ring to it but she did miss some of her Field Agent work as well. As luck would have it she was able to fulfill that desire and became the person with sole responsibility for support and report back on Captain America. There was something to be said about being Captain America’s handler and his girlfriend. There were many jokes to be told. It was the two of them who worked together to begin the investigation into the Winter Soldier.
Unfortunately, Doctor Faustus was at it again - especially in the aftermath of the Civil War, Sharon once again found herself brainwashed and being used as a pawn by Faustus and the Red Skull. And this caused her to do the worst thing imaginable. Sharon Carter killed Captain America while under the influence of their control.
While she was in their “care” she found out she was pregnant with Cap’s child, and this destroyed her, but she remained strong and determined to fight her way through her situation. Red Skull eventually found out about the child, and had even more plans for future pawns. It was all pretty disgusting - but between this and tracking down and releasing the Winter Soldier into SHIELD custody and for his own damn good - Sharon did her damndest to overcome her brainwashing despite the challenges. She fought hard, as she always did.
Knowing that she was always going to be a pawn, and not wanting her child to be a pawn as well, Sharon managed to fight her captors long enough to get stabbed, near fatally, thus ending her pregnancy, and hoping for an end to her own physical and mental imprisonment. Shockingly, Dr. Faustus helped Sharon escape, and seems to have done a complete turn around. Though she wonders how much of that is real and how much of it is implanted in her mind. Doctor Faustus, apparently after even more changes of heart helped Sharon escape, and clued her in to the fact that she hadn’t ACTUALLY killed Steve - only displaced him in time and space.
Sharon is feisty and smart, she’s a fighter if she’s absolutely nothing else she will always fight. She will fight for herself, her place in the world, and for the rights of others. She loves her job, she especially loves her clearance level - its fun to know what to get people for their birthdays based on their personnel files.
She’s smart, and sarcastic, and she’s seen some shit - but she will never stop fighting. She has suffered and sacrificed, and she remembers everything she’s done and while she had perfectly good reasons for it - she is determined never to lose her agency again. She’s still picking up the pieces of her lost time, and now at this point still trying to find Steve. The guilt she has over what she had done, willingly or not, eats at her all the time. And she wonders what parts of her life are real, and which parts are just filler. She has full control of her faculties, though she may be susceptible to manipulation due to her current state. But she has sworn to herself she won’t be going back to the shell she’d been under the Red Skull’s control.
